“Exercise more” and “get in shape” are two of the top New Year’s Resolutions made by adults each year. If this sounds familiar, here are some tips to get your little ones moving in 2017.
Encourage exploration: Your child has unique interests, strengths, and capabilities, and with a little encouragement you can help them discover their own passion for exercise and sports. There are countless athletic activities that you can get your child involved in, whether it’s a classic ball sport like soccer or basketball, or something unique like gymnastics or martial arts. If one activity doesn’t spark their interest, try another!
Fun family outings: By expressing a positive attitude toward exercise and getting the entire family involved, your little one will be much more excited to get active! Walk or ride bikes to your local park, sign up for a family fun run, or go on a hike.
Remember to stay healthy while staying active: Here are a handful of tips to remember when exercising with your child:
- Bring hand wipes to public places such as indoor parks or the zoo.
- Stay hydrated! Young children need five glasses of water each day to stay healthy.
- Wear sunscreen when swimming or playing outside.
- Don’t forget helmets when biking and roller blading.
Volunteer as a coach or team mom: Cheering your kids on from the bleachers is a wonderful symbol of support, but there are several ways to get more involved if you wish to do so. Volunteering to coach their sports team or provide post-game snacks are two great options in addition to helping your child practice at home.
There’s no better way to get your child moving than to set an example and make exercise a fun family activity! Make 2017 the year to get the whole crew in shape—you’ll be glad you did!
