Over this weekend our nation will take some time to honor all of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect the values and freedom we enjoy in the United States. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spend a long weekend with people you love and enjoy some grilling, barbecuing, and fun outdoor activities. This is also a great learning opportunity for the young children in your home. As your family celebrates, take some time to intentionally explain the meaning of Memorial Day to your preschooler.
While giving the ultimate sacrifice is a very sobering topic, don’t be afraid to intentionally explain to your children why we are so grateful to those brave men and women. Visiting a nearby veteran cemetery as a family is an excellent way to honor the fallen. You can also make some snacks to distribute at a nearby nursing home to connect with living veterans.
However you choose to celebrate Memorial Day, be sure to take some time to explain how important it is that we show gratitude and appreciation for military families who have lost a loved one in war. Don’t forget, Memorial Day weekend also marks the unofficial beginning of summer so be sure to have some fun outdoors together too – sack races in the backyard and running through the sprinklers are some great ideas for making memories together!
