Parents – flu season is upon us! We all know what that means. The odds of parents hearing the words, “I don’t feel so good” have increased exponentially. The good news is parents can take proactive steps to help protect their family and neighborhood from the misery of the flu.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu is most effectively spread through person-to-person contact. This means when someone sneezes or coughs and does not cover their mouth, the germs can easily travel to another person. With young children at home it is very easy to spread germs through uncovered coughs and sneezes. However, it’s never too late to begin teaching your child the proper way to cover their mouths! If you have a toddler or preschooler at home, make a fun game out of “catching the germs” each time you sneeze or cough. When your children forget, use it as a learning opportunity and a chance to remind them to cover their mouth next time.
Another helpful way to keep your house safe is by diligently wiping down shared surfaces. The bathrooms and kitchen are popular communal areas in the home that usually contain a great deal of germs. Spend some time wiping down these areas as well as the doorknobs in your house. Every little bit helps!
Finally, if even after all of your hard work to keep the flu at bay it enters your home, please do not ever take your child into their daycare, childcare, or preschool facility. Having a sick child around other children has a 99.99% chance of infecting at least one or two other children. Stay home when you or your child is sick. Never be afraid to ask for help from others if you need more chicken soup or saltine crackers!
