With the clear, crisp air and bright sunshine of spring, now is the perfect time to encourage your child’s imagination. Whether it’s a rainy day for indoor play or a beautiful day for outdoor adventures, there are so many ways to engage your child’s imagination and help her to establish a healthy self-expression.
The most obvious way to enjoy the spring and activate your child’s imagination is to get her outside in the beautiful weather. With a toddler or preschooler, keep a close eye on her, but let her make new friends on a playground and watch as she engages in some creative fun. If you are able to, jump in and play with her as well. Let her set the rules of the game (within reason) and play along as the duke, monster, princess, ballerina, or whatever role needs filling! You will learn a lot about your child when you enter into her imagination – it’s a great chance to connect.
But what do you do on those rainy days that keep the playground out of reach? Instead of spending the whole day in front of the TV or iPad, pick up a good old-fashioned book (complete with actual pages you can turn!) and make it into an imagination moment. Depending on the age of your child, you can grab a board book for your toddler or a chapter book for your kindergartener. Then, follow the three simple steps below to make the book come alive!
- Read the book out loud – use silly voices to make it more interesting!
- Act out the book (or chapter) and let your child choose who gets to be which character.
- Ask your child questions about the plot or moral of the story to help her “get in the shoes” of the characters. “Why do you think they behaved that way?” “How do you think that made him/her feel?” etc.
