Keller Infant Care Tips: The best sleeping position for infants and newborns

Posted on 01-08-2015

Every new parent feels somewhat overwhelmed at some point during the early days with a new baby. One topic that is often researched is the most desired position in which an infant should fall asleep. Sleeping is slightly more complicated for an infant and parents can never be too careful when it comes to providing the right care for a baby.

The back is the best option

To avoid any complications or problems during sleep, the best option is to lay your baby down on the back. This position, although sometimes irritable for the infant, helps to keep airways open, and allows your baby free limb movement. This will help to ensure your infant sleeps comfortably. It also helps to prevent other problems that can occur during the night, and significantly reduces the risk of SIDS.

Keep airways clear

Another helpful piece of information is to keep your infant’s airways clear of obstructions. This means that you should leave out of the crib fluffy toys, blankets or anything else that could obstruct the infant’s breathing. While providing the obvious benefit of free and unobstructed breathing, this also allows for less distractions for your baby so that he or she can fall asleep quickly and wake up less often throughout the night.
